Tang Xianling Mausoleum

Introducing Xianling Mausoleum of Tang Dynasty
Xianling Mausoleum lies 56 km (35 mi) north of Xi'an. Xianling Mausoleum is the first Tang Dynasty (618-907) imperial tomb. Xianling Mausoleum is where Emperor Gaozu, the founding emperor of the Tang Dynasty was buried. Emperor Gaozu was born in 566 CE. He founded the Tang Dynasty in 618 CE. He was forced to abdicate the throne in 626 to his son, Li Shimin, who became Emperor Taizong and the second emperor of the Tang dynasty. When Emperor Gaozu died in May 635, Emperor Taizong issued an imperial edict ordering that the mausoleum of his father should be built matching the size of the Changling Mausoleum of Han Dynasty. Eventually, Xianling Mausoleum was built in the form of square base "pyramid". Emperor Gaozu was buried at Xianling Mausoleum in Oct, 635.

What to expect at Xianling Mausoleum of Tang Dynasty
Xianling Mausoleum was built following the tradition of Han Dynasty Changling Mausoleum with a trapezoid, heaped burial mound. To praise his father’s merits and achievements, Emperor Taizong arranged an unprecedented size and quantity of stone guardian sculptures for the Xianling Mausoleum. It is recorded that Xianling Mausoleum was surrounded by an inner wall with four gates opened on its four cardinal directions. A pair of guarding tigers was placed at each gate. Outside the south gate was the spirit way where a pair of ornamental columns, a pair of rhinoceros and three pairs of government officials were placed from south to north. Many of the stone statues did not survive the ages. Today, the east ornamental column and east stone tiger are still standing. The west stone tiger and east rhinoceros outside the south gate are displayed in the stone carvings exhibition of Xian's Stone Forest Museum.
