The History of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall
The Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall, built to bolster defenses, was commissioned in 1404 by Emperor Yongle (Zhu Di). Its construction predates both the Forbidden City by two years and the Ming Tombs by three. Spanning an impressive 188 years, the project was eventually plagued by rumors of shoddy workmanship and misused funds. Emperor Wanli, enraged by these allegations, summoned General Cai Kai, the overseeing supervisor, back to Beijing and executed him. However, a subsequent investigation revealed the Huanghuacheng section to be exceptionally well-constructed and fortified. Regretting his rash decision, Emperor Wanli inscribed the characters “金汤” (Jintang), meaning “impregnable fortress,” at the base of the wall as a tribute to General Cai’s skill and dedication.

What to Expect at Huanghuacheng Great Wall
Unlike the bustling crowds at Badaling, this relative quiet section of the Great Wall allows for a truly peaceful escape into history and nature. Hiking along the wall, boating through the submerged sections, and taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside create an unforgettable experience.

The Water Great Wall
The Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall, stretching for approximately 12.4 kilometers (7.7 miles), offers a unique and picturesque experience. Unlike more heavily restored sections, Huanghuacheng retains a wilder, more rugged beauty, with portions descending into the reservoir formed by the Huanghuacheng Dam. The ‘Water Great Wall,’ where the wall meets the water, creates stunning reflections and photo opportunities. Dotted with numerous watchtowers, platforms, and passes, this section played a crucial role in protecting the Ming Dynasty capital.

Haoming Lake
Nestled in the mountains near the Great Wall, Haoming Lake is a hidden gem. Fed by natural springs, its waters are pristine and potable. The 18.4-hectare (45.46-acre) lake offers a sweeping view, its surface shimmering like a mirror reflecting the sky. The lake’s true magic is revealed in autumn with the arrival of the Mandarin ducks.

Haoming Lake boasts the distinction of being Beijing’s largest breeding ground for these vibrant birds. As November’s crisp air descends, flocks of Mandarin ducks arrive, their colorful plumage a striking contrast against the serene lake and the majestic mountains. Their soft calls fill the air, harmonizing with the quiet lapping of water against a boat’s hull. It’s a scene of timeless tranquility, a perfect balance between nature and its inhabitants.

Thriving Chestnut Orchard
The chestnut orchard was built in during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Remarkably, over 40 ancient chestnut trees from that era still stand, each a testament to time, having lived for 500 to 600 years. Originally planted by Ming Dynasty soldiers stationed there, these trees served a vital purpose: providing a reliable food source during sieges or times of scarcity. Their survival through the centuries can be largely attributed to their economic value. Chestnuts have always been a profitable commodity, making the trees themselves valuable assets that owners were loath to cut down.

Today, these ancient giants inspire awe and wonder. Their intertwined roots and diverse, often unusual forms speak to their long history. The massive, dragon-like trunks rise majestically, supporting expansive canopies that seem to brush against the sky, creating a truly breathtaking sight.
