Massively imposing by day and a twinkling span of lights by night, the Tsing Ma Bridge is an engineering marvel that links Lantau Island to the rest of Hong Kong. The 2.16km Tsing Ma Bridge was opened to traffic in 1997 as part of key infrastructure serving the new airport on Lantau Island, and has since become a local sightseeing favourite. As the longest suspension Tsing Ma Bridge with both rail and road traffic in the world, the Tsing Ma Bridge got its name from the areas at both of its ends: Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. In the case of a particularly severe typhoon hitting Hong Kong and shutting down the bridge’s six lanes, the two railway lines and two road lanes enclosed below it can still operate and transfer passengers and their luggage to and from the airport.

What to expect at Tsing Ma Bridge

The Tsing Ma Bridge forms a major part of the essential link in the expressway and airport railway connecting the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok. The Bridge has a centre span of 1,377 metres and crosses the marine channel between Ma Wan and Tsing Yi. The main cables supporting the Bridge were made up of some 27,000 tonnes of steel wires. The total length of these wires is sufficient to stretch round the world 4 times. On Tsing Yi, the Bridge links directly to an interchange with connections to the urban districts and, via the Ting Kau Bridge, to the Northwest New Territories. On Ma Wan, high level viaducts extend from the Ma Wan end of the Bridge and cross the island to connect directly with the Kap Shiu Mun Bridge across the Kap Shui Mun channel.

The Lantau Link Viewing Platform
Visitors should head to the The Lantau Link Viewing Platform and Visitors Centre located on the small island of Tsing Yi for the best views. From here, visitors can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the western part of the Lantau Link and the northern part of the Ting Kau Bridge. It is also the optimal point to view the Ma Wan Channel. The facilities available at the attraction include an elevated platform, the outdoor exhibits of components of the Tsing Ma Bridge and the Ting Kau Bridge. Videos, pictures, photos and models detailing the construction of the Lantau Link and the Ting Kau Bridge are displayed in the Visitors Centre. Around 1,200 trees, including Bauhinia trees of different species, namely Bauhinia blakeana, Bauhinia tomentosa and Bauhinia glauca, have been grown at the Viewing Platform. A lot of Rhododendron plants have also been grown here. Annual beautiful Rhododendron Fair is held here around February and March.

How to get to Tsing Ma Bridge
• Take MTR Tung Chung Line or Airport Express to Tsing Yi Station (Exit A1). Then take bus 308M or a taxi to Lantau Link Visitors Center.
• Rent a car/bus from GGC to enjoy a hassle free private transfer from hotels in Hong Kong to Tsing Ma Bridge.

• No commercial filming or videotaping without prior approval at The Lantau Link Viewing Platform.
• Please wear comfortable hiking shoes if you want to take the Tsing Yi Nature Trails (3.5 km in total) to explore better view points of the bridge.
