Wenshu Temple

Introducing Wenshu Temple
Wenshu Monastery, also called Wenshu Yuan Monastery, is the largest and best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu, which is dedicated to Wenshu (Manjushri), the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. It is also the home of the Buddhist Association of Sichuan Province and Chengdu City. The monastery is a good place to wander through where you can escape the modernity and noise of the city. There is low murmur of chanting and despite frequent crowds of worshipers, there is still a sense of serenity and solitude.

What to expect at Wenshu Temple

Initially built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the temple has undergone several times of destruction and restoration and now the complex covers a large area of 116,000 square meters. The major halls of Wenshu Monastery are positioned along the central axis, including the Hall of Three Saints, Sakyamuni Hall, Dharma Preaching Hall, and Scripture Pavilion.

Cultural relics are the highlights of Wenshu Temple. There are 300 statues of Buddha’s and Bodhisattvas moulded in copper, iron, bronze, jade, gauze and clay, or carved from wood and stone. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, over 500 pieces of painting and calligraphy by celebrities have been stored here.

Moreover, there are an atmospheric tea house and a nice vegetarian restaurant at the back of the Wenshu Monastery. The tea house is a comfortable place with bamboo chairs and tables and good local teas. The restaurant has an English menu and can be busy on some days, but the food is very good and imaginative.
