What to expect at Chengdu People’s Park

The park is located in the former ‘Shaocheng’, which was built as the garrison in Qing dynasty. In 1911, the last Qing general in Chengdu, Yu Kun converted part of Shaocheng into the city's first public park, known as Shaocheng Park. In 1924, many improvements were made in the park, including building museums, a library, a zoo, and sports facilities. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the government renamed the park as People's Park in 1950. The park was enlarged, refurbished, and reopened in October 1952.

The park features several Chinese gardens, a beautiful lake, the Railway Protection Movement Monument, and local tea houses. The park is not big but has a bit of everything, peaceful, chaotic, and interesting.

In this park, you can see many interesting things, outdoor karaoke at nightclub volume, blind date party, senior people dancing, calligraphy practice with water on the pavement, and traditional Chinese instruments playing such as the pipa or erhu.

There are apparently three tea houses in this park. The most famous one is the century-old Heming Teahouse, a local landmark. It is nice moment to drink a cup of tea there. Your tea will be brought along with a big thermos of hot water, to top up with. You can sit for hours if you wish.
