Introducing Guanyue Temple
Guanyue Temple is a renowned historical landmark in downtown Quanzhou. Guanyue Temple was originally known as the Guandi Temple, which was dedicated to the venerated Chinese historical hero, Guan Yu (a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei in the late Eastern Han dynasty). In 1914, to commemorate the patriotic hero Yue Fei (a military general who lived during the Southern Song dynasty), the temple was expanded to include him and subsequently renamed “Guanyue Temple.”

The temple, despite its small size (1,294 square meters), is a grand and symmetrical three-hall complex renowned for its exquisite ornamentation. Vivid carvings, sculptures, and porcelain figures adorn the structure, making it a significant site of folk religion in Fujian province and a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims worldwide seeking cultural connection and spiritual solace.

Wucheng Hall
Wucheng Hall (The Hall of Military Accomplishment), the main hall of the Guanyue Temple, is a majestic structure built with a single-eave gable roof and timber frame. Inside, two of China’s most renowned military figures are enshrined: Guan Yu, the epitome of loyalty and righteousness, and Yue Fei, a paragon of patriotism and devotion. Guan Yu, his reddish-brown face radiating an awe-inspiring aura, holds his iconic blade. Yue Fei, clad in armor with a piercing gaze and hand resting on his sword, embodies the spirit of a true hero. These two military saints, symbolizing the fusion of loyalty, righteousness, and patriotism, inspire profound respect. Flanking them are 24 other illustrious generals, including Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun, who represent the glorious military history of China through their bravery, strategic brilliance, and unwavering loyalty.

Chongxian Hall
Chongxian Hall (The Hall of Venerating Ancestors), one of the three main halls within the Guanyue Temple, is dedicated to the veneration of Guan Yu’s ancestors across three generations. The hall houses culturally significant artifacts, most notably a large plaque inscribed with the character “Righteousness (正气)” by the celebrated Song Dynasty scholar Zhu Xi. Further enhancing its historical and cultural value, the hall is adorned with stone carvings and poetic couplets crafted by prominent Quanzhou scholars and dignitaries spanning various dynasties.

Sanyi Hall
Also known as the “Hall of Sworn Brotherhood”, Sanyi Hall is dedicated to the legendary trio from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. Their oath of brotherhood in the Peach Garden became a symbol of loyalty and camaraderie in Chinese culture. The temple enshrines these three brothers, alongside prominent figures from the Shu-Han kingdom, like Zhuge Liang and Zhao Yun. A visit to Sanyi Hall offers a powerful glimpse into the enduring legacy of these historical figures and the values they represent.
