Zhongshan Square

Introducing Zhongshan Square
Zhongshan Square is the oldest square in Dalian. Zhongshan Square is distinguished by its unique European architectural heritage and vibrant atmosphere. Originally built in 1898 as “Nikolayevskaya Square” during the Russian Empire’s control of Dalian, it was later renamed “the large plaza” under Japanese rule during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the Japanese withdrawal in 1945, it was renamed “Zhongshan Square” in honor of Sun Yat-sen, the first president of the Republic of China.

The square features ten radiating roads lined with historically significant buildings showcasing a blend of Romanesque, Baroque, and Renaissance styles. Its central location and rich history make it a must-see destination for visitors to Dalian.

What to Expect at Zhongshan Square
Come explore the vibrant hub of Zhongshan Square, a place where history and modernity intertwine. Wander through its bustling heart, soak in the atmosphere, and discover the unique stories etched into this remarkable place.

Former Dalian Civil Affairs Bureau
Designed by Japanese architect Maeda Matsuin, this elegant building now serves as the Liaoning Provincial Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. It features a prominent central square tower. The ground floor is distinguished by rhythmically spaced windows set between white columns, contrasting beautifully with the rich red brick façade. This interplay of red brick and white stone trim, characteristic of Matsuin’s style, lends the building a graceful and refined appearance, conveying a sense of both strength and sophistication.

Former Bank of North Korea
Built in 1908, the Bank of North Korea (currently ICBC, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China) was a two-story Gothic structure constructed of brick and wood, featuring a symmetrical façade. In 1918, it underwent a major renovation and transformation. The redesigned structure is a reinforced concrete edifice in the Roman style. The main banking hall occupies the front section of the building, with a three-story office wing on either side. Inside the hall, twelve massive columns support the roof, creating a grand and imposing atmosphere.

Former Yamato Hotel
The Yamato Hotel (now known as Dalian Hotel), built in 1909, is a nine-story reinforced concrete structure. Occupying 10,000 square meters (2.47 acres), the building boasts an imposing Baroque facade. The hotel’s opulent interior established it as one of the most luxurious of its time.

Former Dongqing Steamship Company
Built in 1902, the Dongqing Steamship Company (now the Dalian Art Exhibition Hall) is a charming two-story-plus-basement structure in the Western European half-timbered style. The red brick walls are accented with white stone, and the roofline features dormer windows and pointed spires, giving the building a distinctly German architectural feel.
