Dalian Museum

Introducing Dalian Museum
Dalian Museum stands as a city museum showcasing the art and history of Dalian and the broader Liaoning Province. Dalian Museum was formerly known as the Dalian Modern Museum until its renaming in 2018. The museum boasts a diverse collection of over 33,000 artifacts spanning various periods and disciplines, with a focus on modern and contemporary pieces.

The modern collection primarily reflects Dalian’s history from 1861 to 1955, including its folk customs. The contemporary collection highlights artifacts from the period immediately following the liberation of China in 1949 and documents the city’s development and achievements since the reform and opening-up era began in 1978. A significant portion of this collection represents the growth of various sectors in Dalian during this period of reform and opening. Due to Dalian’s history of foreign occupation in the modern era, the museum also houses a collection of foreign weaponry and art, including Russian and Japanese calligraphy, paintings, and porcelain.

Modern Dalian – Exhibition of Dalian History
Covering over 3,000 square meters (0.74 acres), this exhibition explores Dalian’s history from 1840 to 1949, a period marked by international conflict and cultural exchange. More than 1,300 rare artifacts and 800 photographs reveal the city’s resilience and transformation, from its role in coastal defense to the eventual rise of Communist power, including significant periods of Russian and Japanese influence.

Key artifacts in the collection illustrate a range of conflicts, including the Russo-Japanese War and World War II. One notable item is a Russian naval mine with an explosive chamber and five contact horns that detonate upon impact with a ship. This type of mine, used extensively by both Russian and Japanese forces during the Russo-Japanese War, famously sank the Japanese battleship Hatsuse. Further illuminating the end of World War II, Soviet film footage from 1945 (the 34th year of the Republic of China) documents the Red Army’s advance into Northeast China, alongside Chinese armed forces, routing Japanese forces and entering Dalian and Lushun.
