Dalian has a significant history of being used by foreign powers for its ports. Dalian was previously known as Dalniy called by Russians and Dairen called by Japanese. However, the city used to be better known as Port Arthur. Situated at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, Dalian has a good deepwater harbour that is ice-free throughout the year. It has an extremely important strategic position, commanding the entrance to the Bohai (Gulf of Chihli) and maritime access to Tianjin.

Continue with a walk on Zhongshan Square, encircled by European style architectures built in late 19th & early 20th century. Originally built in 1898 by the Russians as Nicholas Square, It was renamed as Zhongshan Square in 1945, in honor of Sun Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen) who founded Republic of China. Day 3 Lushun (Port Arthur), Japan-Russia Prison Site, Baiyu Hill, Lushun Train Station, Russo-Japanese War Sites
Drive out of Dalian to Lushun (Port Arthur), approximately 45km away from Dalian. Lushun is located at the extreme southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, formerly known as Port Arthur. It has an excellent natural harbor, the possession and control of which became a casus belli of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05). Japanese and then Russian administration was established in 1895 and continued until 1905 when control was ceded to Japan. After the Japanese defeat in World War II, the city was under the administration of the Soviet Union, which rented the port from China, until 1950. Although the Russians presented the port to China in 1950, Soviet troops remained in Lushun until 1955. Visit Japan-Russia Prison Site, established by Tsarist invaders and later expanded by the Japanese aggressors. Next, get to the top of Baiyu Hill to have a stunning view of Lushun Harbour. Continue with a visit to Lushun Train Station which features a wood structure in Gothic architectural style with white color and green tiles. It is the best European-style terminal building reserved along the Northeast railroad line. Afterwards, visit Crest Mountains, the battle sites of the Russo-Japanese War. There are fortresses, batteries and remains of warfare all over the East Crest Mountain and the West Crest Mountain.
