Orange Island Park

Introducing Orange Island Park
Orange Island Park is a scenic isle situated within the Xiang River in Changsha. Orange Island Park is renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. As one of many alluvial islands formed in the Xiang River’s lower reaches, it stretches five kilometers(3.11 miles) long but is just over 300 meters across at its widest point. This narrow, elongated shape gives it the appearance of a long dragon.

Named for the abundant orange trees on the island, the park covers 91.64 hectares (226.4 acres) and offers stunning views of the river and the Changsha city skyline. Lush vegetation, walking paths, and pavilions dot the landscape. Its most prominent feature is a colossal granite bust of a young Chinese chairman Mao Zedong, making the park a popular destination for tourists who come for recreation and a glimpse into the Chinese giant.

What to Expect at Orange Island Park
A visit to Orange Island Park is a journey through Changsha’s history. The park’s beautiful landscape provides a serene backdrop to the imposing sculpture of a young Chairman Mao, reminding visitors of the city’s significant role in his life, and promising a uniquely enriching experience.

The Hundred-Meter Fountain
Located at the main entrance, the Hundred-Meter Fountain creates a spectacular display as its water jets erupt skyward, reaching a height of one hundred meters—the equivalent of a 30-story building. This impressive show is a highlight during major holidays and significant events.

The Young Mao Statue
Dominating the landscape of the park is an imposing granite bust of Mao Zedong. The 32-meter-tall (105 ft) sculpture, unveiled in 2009, depicts the future chairman as a thoughtful student in his early thirties, reflecting the period he spent in Changsha during his formative years.

It was on this very island, amidst the picturesque landscape, that Mao, then in his early thirties, contemplated the profound question, immortalized in his poem “Changsha”: “Who controls the rise and fall of the world?” (问苍茫大地,谁主沉浮?) This evocative line encapsulates the intellectual curiosity and burgeoning revolutionary spirit that would later define his life and reshape the destiny of China.

Expansive Orange Orchard
Orange Island Park is renowned for its sprawling 10-acre orchard, which boasts the city’s most extensive collection of orange trees. 1,200 trees representing 42 distinct varieties perfume the air with their blossoms and, when in season, the sweet scent of ripening fruit. This remarkable collection embodies the park’s spirit, a harmonious blend of natural beauty and rich heritage.

Relaxing Beach Area
With its sandy beach shaded by towering palms—Medjool, Canary Island, and California fan—this spot evokes a Southeast Asian resort. An indoor sports arena, aquatic center, and outdoor playground provide plenty of options for active recreation, making this the perfect spot for everyone to unwind and play.
