What to Expect at Changsha Jiandu Museum
While bamboo slips were used elsewhere, they flourished most prominently in China, becoming integral to its early civilization. The Changsha Jiandu Museum offers history enthusiasts a compelling exploration of these “Bamboo Texts,” showcasing their diverse forms, deciphering their inscriptions, and explaining the sophisticated techniques used to create and preserve these fragile historical records.

Exhibition of the Development of Chinese Bamboo and Wooden Slips
Beginning with a glimpse into daily life during the Three Kingdoms period, the exhibition first showcases slips from the Wu State (one of the three major states that competed for supremacy over China in the Three Kingdoms period). These artifacts, including taxation records and census data, offer valuable insights into governance and legal practices of the time. The exhibition then expands, tracing how these writing materials changed across different regions and dynasties of China. Broadening the view even more, a section called ‘Writing Materials of the World’ compares writing surfaces from around the globe, exploring the many ways different cultures have recorded and shared information throughout history. Lastly, the exhibition ends by exploring the artistry of writing on bamboo and wood, showing how calligraphy developed on this unique medium.

Exhibition of Bamboo and Wooden Slips Unearthed in Hunan
This exhibition explores the vibrant history of Hunan province, spanning from the pre-Qin era (before 221 BCE) to the Jin Dynasty (266-420 CE). Through a geographically and chronologically organized display of excavated bamboo and wooden slips, it reveals the political, economic, cultural, and social evolution of the region, offering visitors a compelling glimpse into Hunan’s distinctive historical development.
