Visit Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum
Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is situated at the foot of the second peak of Purple Mountain to the east of Nanjing. Nanjing was where Sun Yat-Sen, first proclaimed the Republic of China in 1911 and where the government had moved from Beijing in the late 1920's. Considered to be the "Father of Modern China", Sun Yat-sen fought against the imperial Qing government and after the 1911 revolution ended the monarchy, and founded the Republic of China. The mausoleum's layout is very similar to the tombs of Chinese emperors and has interesting contrasts and similarities with Xiaoling Tomb of Ming Dynasty, which is found about a half mile to the west on the same side of Purple Mountain.

Visit Xiaoling Mausoleum of the Ming Dynasty
The Xiaoling Mausoleum of the Ming Dynasty is located at the foot of Purple Mountain and contains the tomb of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of the Ming and is one of China's biggest imperial tomb sites and a perfect example of the architectural and stone carving achievement of the Ming Dynasty. It is a UNESCO's World Heritage Sites together with the Ming Tombs in Beijing. It has an 800-meter-long Sacred Way leading to the main structure, with 12 pairs of stone animals such as elephants, lions and horses on both sides of the road and four pairs of warriors and ministers to guard the tomb. The different styles and facial expressions of these works represent the best of the stone carving art during the Ming Dynasty.

Visit Chaotian Gong of Nanjing
Chaotian Gong (Palace of Heaven Veneration) was built as an imperial palace in the Ming dynasty and today it is known as the Nanjing Municipal Museum. Chaotian Gong area has the largest preserved traditional Chinese architectural complex south of Yangtze River. The place was rebuilt in the Qing dynasty as a Confucian temple and academy. Today, the main hall, Dacheng Dian, houses Nanjing Municipal Museum which is dedicated to studying, showcasing, and preserving the cultural achievements of Nanjing throughout its history. It is celebrated for its 100,000 artifacts and artworks, spanning from prehistoric times to the Republic period. Outside of the temple, an antiques market sells jade knickknacks, old woodcarvings, and porcelain are easy to be found, mixed among all sorts of other oddities and curios, ranging from old military medals to bronze incense burners to jade pipes.

Zhonghua Gate
Located immediately to the north of Qinhuai River, Zhonghua Gate (Gate of China) is one of the best preserved and most intricate barbicans in the world. The gate is part of the Ming Dynasty city wall of Nanjing built between 1366 and 1386 to protect the founding capital of the Ming Dynasty. It used to be the world's longest circular city wall, the Ming City Wall, which was originally 35 kilometers around. Zhonghua Gate once served as the southern gate of ancient Nanjing, a 15,168-square-meter fortification that contained four layers of defenses, as well as three grand castles, the ruins of which are connected to each other by a wide ring of wall. Hike up the city wall to get an impressive view over the Qinhuai River to the south and buzzing downtown to the north.

Stroll along Confucian Temple Area
The Confucius Temple in Nanjing was originally constructed in the year of 1034 in the Song Dynasty. It was a place to worship and consecrate Confucius, the great philosopher and educator of ancient China. It was burned down during the Japanese sack of Nanjing in 1937. The current buildings were put up in 1986 using as much of the original stonework as possible. Jiangnan Examination School (Jiangnan is a name used for the lower reaches of the Yangtze River) is located to the east of the Confucian temple. When Nanjing became the capital of China at the beginning of the Ming dynasty it served as the examination hall for both provincial examinations and the palace examinations for candidates from all over China. In the Confucian Temple Area, Qinhuai River flows through it. Take the painted boats to cruise on the Qinhuai River (optional), 50 to 60 original village sites can be seen on the river banks.
