History of the Qinhuai River
The Qinhuai River, formerly known as the Huai River, holds a millennia-old history. Legend credits its renaming to Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s (259 BC-210 BC) ambitious engineering feats, while archaeological findings date human presence along its banks back to the Stone Age.

As a pivotal settlement and commercial hub, the river thrived notably during the Six Dynasties (220 AD-589 AD), attracting merchants and scholars alike. This bustling ambiance endured into the Song Dynasty (960-1279), solidifying the river’s role as a cultural nucleus. During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties, the riverbanks witnessed a surge in majestic architecture. Noble families erected stately residences nearby, while scholars and artists were drawn to its scenic beauty and intellectual vigor. This enduring legacy of prosperity and cultural significance firmly establishes the Qinhuai River as a timeless symbol of Nanjing’s vibrant past.
