History of the White Horse Pagoda
The White Horse Pagoda’s construction is steeped in legend, one of which honors the horse of Buddhist monk Kumarajiva. Legend recounts that upon reaching the ancient city of Shazhou (Dunhuang), Kumarajiva halted at Puguang Temple to preach scriptures. When his white horse fell ill and died before their departure, Kumarajiva, grief-stricken, erected a sacrificial altar and performed Buddhist rites for nine days. In the temple courtyard, he built the White Horse Pagoda, a distinctive nine-storied edifice housing Buddha relics.
Another legend associated with the pagoda focuses on Xuan Zang, a prominent figure in the introduction of Buddhism to China, and his white horse. According to this tale, while traveling through Dunhuang, Xuan Jiang fell into a trap set by evil spirits, and his horse bravely sacrificed its life to rescue him. In gratitude for this act, the people of the city named the pagoda as White Horse Pagoda.
Despite the various legends, one fact remains: the pagoda stands as a symbol of the deep bond between humans and animals.
