The Prayer Hall
The mosque’s magnificence reaches its peak in the Prayer Hall, a space unmatched in size throughout Ningxia. The hall’s roof, a majestic sweep of hip-and-gable design, is adorned with exquisitely sculpted dragons and pearls that trace the lines of its soaring eaves. This ethereal sight evokes a feeling of otherworldly grace, as though the very structure yearns to take flight. Over 100 wooden pillars, each with a substantial 60-centimeter diameter, rise in rhythmic intervals, interspersed with walls, to support the expansive hall. This space, encompassing 1102 square meters, provides ample room for 1500 worshippers to gather in prayer. Above the railings, arches are adorned with a delicate interplay of floral and plant motifs, interwoven with verses from the Quran.
The arches seem to guide the eye downward, where the warm brown of the wooden floor is softened by carpets. Each carpet, a testament to the devotion of the mosque’s worshippers, contributes to the palpable sense of piety that pervades the hall. Whoever enters will certainly feel its embrace.
The Minarets
In China, the minarets of mosques often feature a distinctive pavilion style, characterized by a square base that transitions into a hexagonal or octagonal shape at the top. A notable example is the Najiahu Mosque, where minarets reach heights of up to 21 meters (69 ft) and consist of three stories. These structures are constructed with wooden frames and brick, topped with hip-and-gable roofs and elegant upturned eaves. Adding to their grandeur, the minarets are adorned with vibrant red doors and colorful pillars. Further enhancing their magnificence, the eaves are intricately carved with dragon heads, their mouths agape and eyes wide, creating a lifelike and awe-inspiring presence.
