Visit Jiayuguan Pass (2 hours)
Jiayuguan Pass is the first frontier fortress at the west end of the Ming dynasty Great Wall. Along with Juyongguan Pass in Beijing and Shanhaiguan Pass at the east end of the Great Wall, it is one of the main passes of the Great Wall. The pass is located at the narrowest point of the western section of the Hexi Corridor and lies between two hills. It was built to protect the one remaining vulnerable entry point in a desert valley otherwise surrounded by mountains during the Ming Dynasty starting in 1372 and ending in 1540. The Pass creates what is basically a small walled city encompassing an area of 25,000 square meters, or 6 acres with a guard tower on each corner. It has only two entrances at the East and West gates respectively. Among the passes on the Great Wall, Jiayuguan Pass is the most intact surviving ancient military building. The pass is known by the name the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven".

Hike the Overhanging Great Wall (1 hour)
Running about 9km north of Jiayuguan Pass, the Overhanging Great Wall is believed to have been first constructed in 1539 during the Ming Dynast standing 1.5 kilometers long and snaking up the mountain. Using yellow earth and local gravel, the wall was built painstakingly layer by layer. Supposedly, when viewed from afar, the wall looks like it is hanging over the mountain tops, giving it the name Overhanging Great Wall. After it was reconstructed in 1987, it stands at just 750 meters long, although still taking the same route straight to the top of the ridge line. With a steep ascent over 400 steps, the stunning snow-covered Qilian mountains, the vast open desert, and the factories of modern day China can be seen in the distance.

Visit Wei & Jin Mural Brick Tomb (1 hour)
Located about 15 kilometers northeast of Jiayuguan Pass, Wei & Jin Mural Brick Tomb is a big tomb group with over 1,400 tombs built between the 3rd Century and 5th Century during the Wei & Jin dynasties. Originally excavated in 1972, it is renowned as the largest subterranean art gallery in the world and housing many colorful murals. Most tombs are of past families, housing bodies of three or four generations, and currently Grave 6 and Grave 7 are open with more to be developed responsibly. Entering the ancient brick tomb, you will marvel at the vivid murals and amazing engineering & layout design. Each Wei & Jin tomb has two or three chambers which are connected by corridors paved with tiles in various flower patterns and other designs. The gateway into the tombs were decorated with delicate patterns artistic lines symbolizing clouds, water, fire, gods and unique style strange animals of the past. The exquisite murals on the inner chamber walls tell of the master and mistress's, a contemporary carefree life, and the servant's hard working lifestyle. Many reflect the political, cultural, military, and scientific developments of the Wei -Jin Dynasty era, and an insight into this ancient Chinese feudal society.
