The First Strategic Post

Introducing The First Strategic Post
The First Strategic Post, also known as Taolai River Becaon Tower, dates its origin to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The First Strategic Post is located at the west part of Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province, about 9 km (5.6 miles) west from Jiayuguan City. Atop a 56m-high (183.7 ft) cliff overlooking the Taolai River, the beacon tower is considered to be the first and most vital signaling tower along the western front of the Great Wall. It was also regarded as the most dangerous beacon tower in the world. However, the passage of time has weathered this historic structure, leaving behind a sizable, wind-eroded mound of compacted earth as its sole remnant after centuries.

What to expect at The First Strategic Post

Imagine standing at the very point where ancient sentinels once kept watch, gazing out at the same awe-inspiring views of Jiayuguan Fortress and the rugged desert landscape that stretches towards the horizon. Though the First Strategic Post has succumbed to the passage of time, the site is being revitalized with modern exhibits and interactive displays that bring the history of this crucial gateway to life.

Underground Exhibition Hall

The Underground Exhibition Hall showcases a collection of documents, pictures, sandboxes, and sculptures that narrate the history of the First Strategic Post and Jiayuguan Fortress. Adjacent to the hall, a glass sightseeing platform offers visitors a panoramic view of the Taolai Valley and Qilian Mountain in the distance, with the swift, yellow Taolai River flowing underneath.

Taolai Old Inn

Constructed using rammed earth, wooden boards, and sand, Taolai Old Inn features a traditional courtyard design that harmonizes seamlessly with the expansive desert surroundings. Facing north, the inn features 3 courtyards and a total of 28 rooms. The presence of horse stables, stone mills, stone mortars, and large wooden carts infuses the place with an authentic and rustic charm, appearing as though it is patiently anticipating the arrival of camel caravans from the central plains and western areas to make a stop.

Ming Dynasty Military Camp Replica

Connected to the Taolai Old Inn by a bridge over Taolai Valley, there’s a reconstructed ancient military camp. Spanning 11,000 square meters, this vast camp features an impressive sculpture group titled “Battlefield Respite” to the west. The sculpture depicts seven soldiers and a warhorse, providing a striking and captivating visual experience. The rest of the camp comprises tents, command posts, a drill ground, and barracks, all surrounded by six watchtowers, four guard towers, and three outposts. This immersive historical site offers visitors a glimpse into the strategic military operations of the past.
