What to expect at Wei-Jin Tombs

Wei-Jin Tombs serve as a powerful testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of ancient China. Currently, only Tomb 6 is accessible to visitors, allowing them to witness the breathtaking murals and experience the awe-inspiring atmosphere of this ancient site. Efforts are underway to develop and open additional tombs to the public, expanding access to this remarkable cultural heritage.

Tomb No.6 and Brick Murals

Tomb No. 6, a representative tomb of a government official from the Western Jin Dynasty (266-317), is a remarkable example distinguished by its extensive use of mural bricks, which has remarkably remained intact despite over 1,600 years of history. Its arched doorway, topped by a vibrantly decorated gatehouse, welcomes visitors into a three-chambered space: a front chamber, a middle chamber, and a rear chamber. The gatehouse, adorned with mythical creatures like Kirin, as well as birds and flowers, showcases the colorful artistry of the time.

A total of 132 mural bricks have been discovered within the tomb, offering a captivating view into the lives of its owners. The front chamber, probably used as a bedroom with a storage cabinet and cupboard, showcases 55 mural bricks. In contrast, the middle chamber displays 65 bricks, and the rear chamber has 12. These murals depict a diverse array of activities such as grazing, farming, silkworm farming, hunting, feasting, music, dance, and textile production, providing invaluable insights into the daily life and customs of that time.

Wei-Jin Tombs Museum

The Wei-Jin Tombs Museum spans 761 square meters, with a building area of 276 square meters and an exhibition hall of 187 square meters. Despite its modest size, the museum provides a rich experience, particularly in its exhibition hall showcasing Wei and Jin Dynasty mural art. Visitors can view a collection of 66 artifacts, including art pieces and grave goods. A visit to this museum offers a unique and intimate glimpse into the artistic achievements and cultural beliefs of a fascinating period in Chinese history.
