Donglianhua was once a prosperous trading town and controlled large sections of the Tea Horse Road, an ancient network of caravan paths winding through the mountains of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet in Southwest China. Inhabitants of Donglianhua village are mostly descendants of Muslim soldiers from Central Asia sent to Yunnan by Kublai Khan, the first emperor of Mongol Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). After the fall of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty in 1386, these Muslim soldiers remained in Yunnan and gradually became farmers and traders. Donglianhua Village was listed as one of the Most Beautiful Chinese Villages for Leisure by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture.
