History of Little Putuo Island

According to local legend, Little Putuo Island is believed to be the magical seal left by Avalokitesvara to calm the sea. In ancient times, Erhai Lake was troubled by dragons, causing tumultuous waves that endangered the lives of fishermen and destroyed their boats. Unable to subdue the dragons, the fishermen resorted to praying for divine intervention. Eventually, Avalokitesvara, moved by the fishermen’s plight, descended from the heavens and cast down a great magic seal to suppress the dragons. Instantly, the sea became calm, and the fishermen were able to lead peaceful lives. In gratitude to Avalokitesvara, the Bai people constructed pavillion and statues on the island for worship.
