Introducing Wild Elephant Valley
Wild Elephant Valley is a nature reserve located in Xishuangbanna. Wild Elephant Valley is China’s first national park dedicated to the protection of Asian elephants and their habitat. Established in 1996, this 370-hectare sanctuary, with its interwoven rivers and lush rainforest, provides a home for migrating Asian elephants, allowing them to thrive in their natural environment. 

Visitors can engage in various eco-tourism activities, including guided tours and walking trails, which offer incredible opportunities to observe these gentle giants up close while fostering an appreciation for their natural behaviors and the surrounding wildlife.

Elephant Encounter Experience
Deep in Wild Elephant Valley, visitors can gather at designated viewing areas, hoping to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. While sightings aren’t guaranteed, the valley is home to around 50 herds, totaling 300 to 350 elephants, and visitors can typically expect to see a herd every four to five days as they wander, bathe, and play in the rainforests. Sometimes, the elephants move with a confident swagger, pausing to curiously observe the fascinated witnesses watching them. And on truly special occasions, multiple herds converge in the valleys, their trumpeting calls echoing through the air, creating a breathtaking and unforgettable spectacle.

 


Elephant Performance

Currently, there are 16 trained elephants residing in the reserve, all appearing well-cared for and treated. These intelligent giants perform a variety of impressive feats. They bow to welcome guests, perform headstands, dance gracefully to music, skillfully cross narrow bridges, and even “kick” balls with their trunks. Visitors can enjoy an unforgettable ride on an elephant’s back or even perch on their powerful trunk for a truly unique photo opportunity. For a truly unforgettable experience, you can lie down and let an elephant give you a massage with its foot!

Asian Elephant Museum
After witnessing the majesty of Asian elephants in their natural habitat, deepen your understanding of these incredible animals at the Asian Elephant Museum. The valley is also the place for wild animals such as monkeys, wild buffalos, slowworm, butterfly, gibbon, sloth, hornbills, peacocks, macaque, etc. Lizards Garden is not only the wildlife exhibition area which favorites by tourists but also the shelter for lots of injured wildlife. Most of the animals that live here are rescued from the wild, including national protected animals such as pythons, king cobras, lizards, wild boars, etc.

 
 

How to Get to Wild Elephant Valley
• The Wild Elephant Valley is located approx. 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) northeast of Xishuangbanna.
• Charter a car/bus from GGC to enjoy a hassle-free transfer to the Wild Elephant Valley.

Additional Travel Advice on Wild Elephant Valley
• Please wear sunscreen, hat and sunglasses to prevent UV.
• It is suggested to wear long-sleeved clothes or prepare mosquito repellent to prevent mosquito or bug bites in the rain forest.
• For your safety, do not make loud noises and keep a distance from the wild elephants.
• Wild Elephant Valley is arranged in a circular shape. Visitors can enter the scenic area from either the south gate or the north gate. The whole valley is connected through sky plank trestle, pedestrian walkway and tropical rain forest sightseeing rope-way. Thus tourists can take a 3-hour loop in the valley, and no need of backtrack.
