What to expect at Manfeilong Pagodas

Standing on the back slope of Manfeilong Mountain, these pagodas are painted with lime, hence their name. They are also called Bamboo Shoots Pagodas because they look like bamboo shoots coming out from the ground in spring.

The pagodas were first built in 1204. Among the nine pagodas in the group, the middle one measures 16.29 metres high. The other eight smaller ones, 9.1 metres high each, stand separately at eight corners. Under the base there is a niche with a statue of Buddha inside. On the wails of all nine pagodas are relief carvings and colour paintings. The unique shape and structure of this group of pagodas show that their builders combined the Buddhist architectural form in Southeast Asian countries with the architectural style of nationalities living in the Yunnan border areas.

To the south of the pagoda is a footprint in the rock, which according to legend was left by Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism.

The pagoda attracts Buddhists from Myanmar and Thailand, and during the Water Sprinkling Festival crowds of Dai people from Manfeilong village gather in front of the pagoda to celebrate the new year.
