Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion is a Buddhist pavilion located in Xishuangbanna. Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion is part of the Jingzhen Temple complex, renowned for its unique architectural features. Constructed in 1701 AD, this pavilion was designed to honor Shakyamuni Buddha, drawing inspiration from the location where he delivered his teachings. The structure played a significant role in the temple’s religious life, serving as a gathering place for abbots to deliberate on crucial spiritual matters. Additionally, it was the esteemed venue where monks were ceremoniously elevated to the position of abbot, marking important milestones in their religious careers.

What to Expect at Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion
The Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion is a breathtaking structure of brick and wood. Its octagonal design features 31 slanted surfaces inlaid with colorful glass, adorned with gold and silver patterns depicting flowers, animals, and human figures. Each of the eight corners is graced with sculptures of golden roosters, phoenixes, and vibrant floral carvings, enhancing its ornate beauty. Four entrances, each showcasing unique patterns rooted in Dai ethnic culture, welcome visitors. The main entrance is flanked by a pair of stone lions, their teeth and claws bared in protection. At their base, offerings of glutinous rice balls symbolize auspiciousness and purity in Buddhist tradition, a reverent prayer for peace and happiness.
The pavilion’s impressive roof boasts ten tiers of ridges, forming a stepped pyramid topped with exquisitely crafted glazed tiles. A lotus-shaped ornamental canopy crowns the structure, complete with an iron wind chime rod that produces a melodious sound when touched by the breeze. This harmonious blend of architectural beauty and cultural symbolism makes the pavilion an undeniable landmark, inspiring awe in every visitor.
