Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda

Introducing Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda
Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda is an imposing pagoda located in Hohhot. Built during the Liao Dynasty (916-1125 AD), Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda is the oldest existing building in the city.

Dominating the skyline of Hohhot, the majestic pagoda stands as a testament to the region’s rich Buddhist heritage. Constructed from bricks and adorned with white paint, this impressive structure reaches a height of 55.6 meters (182.4 ft) and features a distinctive seven-level octagonal design. Its name, which translates to “Ten Thousand Huayan Scriptures Pagoda,” reflects its original purpose: to safeguard a vast collection of handwritten copies of the revered “Huayan Sutra.” This architectural feat showcases the artistic and spiritual values of its time and continues to be a significant symbol of cultural preservation in the area.

Its intricate designs and peaceful surroundings provide the perfect setting for reflection and appreciation of its rich heritage.

The Pogoda
The Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda features a harmonious structure that appears particularly majestic. The entire pagoda is divided into three main parts: the base, the body, and the spire.

The base itself is intricately adorned with carvings of intertwined flowers, birds, and beasts, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. Above this magnificent base, the seven-tiered body of the pagoda is constructed with exquisite reliefs depicting Buddhist figures, bodhisattvas, vajra protectors, and heavenly kings. Each level features a combination of functional and decorative doors arranged in a staggered pattern, adding to the visual intrigue. Additionally, wind chimes hung at each corner—totaling 272—create a melodious sound when the gentle breeze passes through, enhancing the serene atmosphere.

Within the pagoda, a spiral staircase winds its way upward, supported by multiple layers of interlocking wooden beams. The spire itself is adorned with inverted patterns of lotus flowers, pearls, and treasure vases, culminating in a breathtaking pinnacle that symbolizes spiritual ascent.
