The Phoenix Terrace
Nanshan Mountain earned the name “Phoenix Mountain” from a legend dating back to the Southern Liang Dynasty (397-414 AD). The story claims a mythical phoenix, a symbol of balance and grace in Chinese culture, once landed on its slopes. A poem celebrating the connection between the mythical bird and the mountain remains popular to this day: “Phoenix Terrace waits, for the firebird’s descent, /Its wings paint the heavens, then vanish from sight, /Still echoes the Qiangdi’s melody lament, /While a sliver of moon bathes the mountain in light.”/

While the original “Phoenix Terrace” built to commemorate this event has faded over time, a modern structure now stands in its place. This impressive 30-meter (98.4 ft) tall building, also called Phoenix Pavilion, sits on the mountain’s northwestern side. Its design evokes a phoenix taking flight, with white sails billowing outward, symbolizing development and progress.

The Pearl of Pu’ning
Situated on the Xishan Mountain hills in Xining at an elevation of 2,395 meters (7,857.6 feet), a prominent television transmission tower stands as a notable landmark of the city. This tower, rising to a height of 188 meters (616.8 feet), is about one-third the size of Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower. Positioned opposite Nanshan Mountain, it mirrors the presence of the Phoenix Terrace, creating a harmonious balance between the city’s natural and man-made features.

Nanchan Temple
Nanchan Temple, also known as Nanshan Temple, is nestled on the northern slopes of a mountain, with a history dating back to the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD). By 1410, the temple had expanded significantly, becoming a prominent spiritual site. Although much of the temple was destroyed during warfare in 1863, it was later rebuilt into an even larger and more impressive complex. Today, the temple stands as one of the most well-preserved ancient architectural ensembles in Xining, covering approximately 6,000 square meters. The temple’s main structures include the Hall of Mahavira, the Hall of a Thousand Buddhas, the Hall of the Jade Buddha, the Hall of the Three Saints, the Hall of Weituo, the Hall of Maitreya, and the Hall of Ksitigarbha, each contributing to its profound spiritual and historical significance.

Fazhuang Temple
To the left of Nanchan Temple sits Fazhuang Temple, a beacon of Buddhist practice and the largest Han Chinese Buddhist nunnery in all of Qinghai Province. Founded in 1943, Fazhuang Temple impresses with its grand architecture. Many of its halls boast the classic features of Buddhist design: double-eaved hip roofs crowned with orange tiles, all set against striking red walls. Visitors can explore significant structures, including the Hall of the Mountain Gate, the Hall of the God of Wealth, the Hall of the Jade Buddha, and the Hall of the Mahavira.

The temple’s influence extends beyond its walls, hosting six major religious events each year that draw Buddhist communities from across Qinghai Province. For those seeking to immerse themselves in the region’s vibrant Buddhist culture, timing a visit with one of these events provides an especially profound experience.
