Xining Dongguan Mosque

Introducing Xining Dongguan Mosque
Xining Dongguan Mosque is a grand religious site located in the city. Xining Dongguan Mosque is the largest mosque in Qinghai Province with an area of 21,951 square meters (5.42 acres).

Nestled in the heart of history since 1380, the Dongguan Mosque represents the long-standing tradition of Islam in China. Its architecture reflects a beautiful fusion of classic Chinese design and Hui Muslim craftsmanship. Over the centuries, it has grown to house the largest Muslim congregation in China, with throngs of devout Muslims gathering daily for prayer. This growth solidified its role as the preeminent Islamic educational institution in Northwest China, nurturing generations of scholars and further establishing its position as the central hub for the Ikhwani sect, a reformist movement within Islam. As a result of its historical significance and enduring influence, the Dongguan Mosque’s authority extends far beyond its own walls. At present, the selection and approval of head imams across Qinghai and Gansu provinces are governed by this venerable institution, signifying its lasting leadership within the regional Muslim community.

What to Expect at Xining Dongguan Mosque
The Dongguan Mosque stands as a beacon of spiritual solace for the Muslim community in Xining. More than just a place of worship, the mosque serves as a vibrant community center, welcoming all who seek solace, reflection, or simply a moment of peace within its stunning embrace.

The Main Gate & The Minarets
Visitors are welcomed through a grand five-arch gateway, with “Dongguan Mosque” inscribed above, hinting at the sacred ground beyond. Two impressive minarets, reaching a height of 8 meters, or 26.25 feet, flank the entrance. Designed in a three-story hexagonal pavilion style, these minarets with distinct Chinese architectural influences serve as platforms from which the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer.

The Prayer Hall
The heart of the mosque is the expansive Prayer Hall, meticulously oriented westward towards the holy city of Mecca. Covering an area of 1,102 square meters, the hall can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers. The architectural design beautifully marries elements of different cultures: sturdy blue brick walls speak to traditional mosque aesthetics, while the roof boasts vibrantly glazed tiles and a Tibetan-style ornamental vase along its ridge, reminiscent of grand Han Chinese palaces. The overall effect is one of serene grandeur, fostering a sense of tranquility and reverence. Before entering the Prayer Hall, worshippers perform ritual ablutions in the designated Wudu Area. Every Friday, the mosque hums with a special energy as Muslims gather for Jumu’ah (Friday prayer), the congregational prayer that unites them in worship.
