Sun Moon Mountain

Introducing Sun Moon Mountain
Sun Moon Mountain is situated on the eastern side of Lake Kokonor. Sun Moon Mountain is a branch of the Qilian Mountains, stretching northwest to southeast. With an average elevation of around 4,000 meters (13,132 ft), it holds significant importance as a natural geographical boundary in China, demarcating the boundary between the country’s monsoon and non-monsoon regions. This imposing mountain also separates Qinghai Province’s inland and outward flowing river systems.

This natural divide effectively distinguishes between agricultural and nomadic civilizations. East of the mountain lies Qinghai’s agricultural heartland, with fertile fields irrigated by a network of channels. West of the mountain, a vast expanse of pastureland provides grazing for herds of cattle and sheep, representing a distinct nomadic lifestyle. This stark dichotomy, resembling the distinct appearances of the sun and the moon, inspired the mountain’s evocative name.

Beyond its geographical significance, Sun Moon Mountain holds immense historical importance. Throughout the ages, it has witnessed ancient Chinese alliances, peace treaties sealed through marriage, battles, and diverse forms of foreign trade.
