Covering 200 square miles, Zhangye Danxia Geopark was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The Danxia landforms are made of strips of red sandstone alternating with chalk and other sediments that were deposited over millions of years, like slices of a layered cake. They are a geological wonder of the world known for their otherworldly colors that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains. The Rainbow Colored Mountains are cretaceous sandstones and siltstones that were deposited in China before the Himalayan Mountains were formed. The sand and silt was deposited with iron and trace minerals that provided it with the key ingredient to form the colors we see today. Here you'll find Tibetan and Chinese cave art and the hoof print of the legendary flying horse who chose the mountain as a holy site. Then you will visit the Giant Buddha Temple. Marco Polo discribed a giant reclining Buddha in the city of Zhangye where he stood in front of the Buddha and was inspired by the dedication of the Buddhist monks to create such a large structure. Originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227), the temple is home to the largest statue of the Reclining Buddha in China. The eponymous Giant Buddha statue is 33 metres (108 ft.) high, 49 metres (161 ft.) wide, and 24 metres (79 ft.) long. The temple itself is also one of the largest remaining relics of the Western Xia Dynasty. This Giant Buddha Temple is also believed to be the birthplace of Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor who ruled China in the 13th century. It commands fascinating views of the boundless Gobi Desert and the snow-capped Qilian Mountains. Then we will stop by the Overhanging Great Wall. When viewed from afar, this part of Great Wall of China looks like it is hanging over the mountain tops, giving it the name Overhanging Great Wall. Later, proceed to Wei-Jin Mural Brick Tomb, a huge tomb group of more than 1,400 tombs built between the 3rd and 5th century and houses vast collection of murals.
