Explore Hongcun Ancient Village
Hongcun Ancient Village is located at the foot of a hill next to a stream which forms two pools, the Moon Pond in the centre of the village and the other to the south. It is most noted for its overall design that resembles the shape of an ox with the nearby hill (Leigang Hill) interpreted as the head, and two trees standing on it as the horns. Four bridges across the Jiyin stream can be seen as the legs whilst the houses of the village form the body. Inside the “body”, the Jiyin stream represents the intestines and various lakes such as the “South Lake” form the other internal organs. Principal Street connects the South Lake and the Moon Pond to the north and south, respectively. The ancient Academy of the South Lake casts its shadow in the lake and creates a tranquil scene together with ancient trees and graceful buildings around it. Today, the approximately 150 residences dating back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties are said to be among the best of their kind in China. Hongcun Ancient Village was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.

Explore Xidi Ancient Village
Surrounded by mountains and built along and between three streams running east-west, Xidi Ancient Village was first built during the Huangyou era (1049–1053) of Song Dynasty Emperor Renzong. Today, 124 well-preserved wooden residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties with beautiful carvings form the major attractions. The street pattern of Xidi is dominated by a main road which runs in an east-west direction and is flanked by two parallel streets. These major streets are joined by many narrow alleyways. Small open spaces are confined to areas immediately in front of the main public buildings, such as the "Hall of Respect", the "Hall of Reminiscence", and the "Memorial Archway of the Governor". Backed by picturesque hills and towering ancient woods, Xidi Ancient Village is noted for the harmony of its architecture and its colorful fields. The residential buildings are mostly black and white. The decorations display a strong flavor of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the houses, there are collections of precious calligraphy and handicrafts. Potted plants, fishing pools and flowerbeds give the whole village a sense of harmony with nature and manmade culture. Xidi Ancient Village was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
Explore Tunxi Old Town
Resplendent with white-washed walls, coal black roofs, horse head eaves, and ornamental decorations, the buildings that flank the Old Street of Tunxi Old Town are some of the finest in Anhui province. Dated back to Song Dynasty (960-1279), Tunxi was initially formed during 1082-1135 when Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty moved his capital to Hangzhou and commissioned droves of architects and workmen to build his new capital. Many of them came from Tunxi and, when they finally returned home, they chose to imitate the style of the architecture that they had seen in Hangzhou. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, local Hui merchants invested money into building 47 stores along Tunxi’s Old Street. By the Qing Dynasty, the town had become one of the major distribution centres for the ancient region of Huizhou. The Tunxi old street was paved with flagstones with a total length of 1273 meters in which nearly 900 meters is the pedestrian street. Shops standing both sides are generally of 2-3 floors, not very large but deep, commonly with business in front while workshop, store or home are at the rear part.
