Jiulong Waterfall
Introducing Jiulong Waterfall
Jiulong Waterfall is a spectacular cascade renowned for its changing appearance. Jiulong Waterfall is located to the southeast of Mount Huangshan. Its name, Jiulong (Nine Dragons), refers to the way the water appears to flow in nine distinct sections, resembling the mythical creatures twisting and turning down the cliffs. However, the actual number of visible “dragons” can change depending on the season and rainfall; sometimes fewer sections are prominent, while during periods of heavy rain, even more cascades might appear.
Surrounded by lush vegetation and dramatic rock formations, the waterfall’s beauty is enhanced by the interplay of light and shadow on the cascading water, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors who hike the scenic trails leading to its various viewpoints. From these same trails, hikers can also enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, making a visit to Jiulong Waterfall an unforgettable part of any trip to Mount Huangshan.

What to Expect at Jiulong Waterfall
For those seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life and a refreshing escape, Jiulong Waterfall is an ideal destination, and a perfect prelude to a visit to Mount Huangshan. The waterfall cascades spectacularly down a 600-meter (1,968 ft) stretch of mountainside, plunging a total of 300 meters (984 ft), creating a truly breathtaking spectacle.
The 9 Waterfalls
Nine waterfalls, each creating its own unique pool, contribute to the overall grandeur of the “Nine Dragons.” The first cascade plunges 100 meters (328 ft) into a vast, circular pool of water. The ninth cascade, a breathtaking 120-meter (394 ft) fan, descends into a shimmering emerald lagoon. Other notable features include the Dragon Mother Pool with its two deep basins; the elliptical pond of the Fourth Waterfall; the fish-shaped lagoon known as the Fish Dragon Pool; the emerald Dragon Heart Pool, a smaller, heart-shaped pool nestled within the sixth cascade; the hidden grotto veiled by the Seventh Waterfall, known as the Water Curtain Cave; and the vibrantly colored pond beneath the Eighth Waterfall. Each of these features showcases nature’s artistry and offers a distinct vista of the waterfalls’ majesty and splendor.
The Guizang Temple
Jiulong Waterfall’s spiritual heart lies within the tranquil Guizang Temple. Its name, echoing ancient wisdom, is drawn from the “Guizang Yi Jing” (Book of Changes), a text attributed to the legendary Yellow Emperor, Huangdi, deeply connecting the temple to the ancestral roots of the Han Chinese. The temple itself, a single, modestly appointed hall, exudes an air of quiet reverence. Despite its simplicity, it draws those seeking blessings and good fortune, who come to offer their prayers within its peaceful embrace.
