Explore Guanlu Village
Guanlu village was first built during the Five Dynasty era circa 907-960AD. This small village’s drawcard sights are the extravagant households of eight rich brothers surnamed Wang who, during the late Qing Dynasty, which ended in 1911, made their fortune by selling candle wax. Each residence shares similar elegant Huizhou features, with interior courtyards, carved wood panels and small gardens. A distinctive aspect of the residences is their elegantly painted ceilings, the patterns and details of which survive. Each an independent entity, the households are interconnected by doors and linked together into a systemic whole. Covering 6039 square meters (65,000 square feet) in total, the Eight Households occupy about two-thirds of the village. Compared to other villages at the foot of Huangshan Mountain, Guanlu Village retains a tranquil and isolate identity with 400 residents, being a less known tourist attraction off the beaten track.
Visit Nanping Village
Nanping Village has almost a thousand-year history. It owns large-scale Hui-style ancient houses from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Nowadays the village is still inhabited by over 1,000 people, and over 300 of its buildings date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. These stunning mansions, with their white-washed walls and coal black roofs, are dotted throughout a maze of 72 lanes that zigzag throughout Nanping. The village’s spectacular architecture is punctuated by eight ancestral halls, of which Xuzhi Hall and Kuiguang Hall are considered the most well-preserved. Parts of Ang Lee's movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed in the 490 year old Ming dynasty Kuiguang Hall. Plus some other 30 to 40 films which have been shot in the village, Nanping Village is honored as China's Film Village.

Explore Xidi Ancient Village
Surrounded by mountains and built along and between three streams running east-west, Xidi Ancient Village was first built during the Huangyou era (1049–1053) of Song Dynasty Emperor Renzong. Today, 124 well-preserved wooden residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties with beautiful carvings form the major attractions. The street pattern of Xidi is dominated by a main road which runs in an east-west direction and is flanked by two parallel streets. These major streets are joined by many narrow alleyways. Small open spaces are confined to areas immediately in front of the main public buildings, such as the "Hall of Respect", the "Hall of Reminiscence", and the "Memorial Archway of the Governor". Backed by picturesque hills and towering ancient woods, Xidi Ancient Village is noted for the harmony of its architecture and its colorful fields. The residential buildings are mostly black and white. The decorations display a strong flavor of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the houses, there are collections of precious calligraphy and handicrafts. Potted plants, fishing pools and flowerbeds give the whole village a sense of harmony with nature and manmade culture. Xidi Ancient Village was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
