Xitang’s origin dates back to the Warring States period around 476 BCE, making it one of the oldest of the dozen-odd ancient water towns in China’s Jiangnan (south of Yangtze River) region. However, the buildings that stand here today belong to the later Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Built around the intersection of nine rivers, the waterways form junctions that can only be crossed by bridges – 104 of them.
