Qiao Family Compound

Introducing Qiao Family Compound (from wikipedia)
The Qiao Family Compound, originally the Zaizhong Hall and officially Qiao's Grand Courtyard, is a courtyard house located in Qi County, approximately 54km from Taiyuan. It is the residential compound of well-known financier Qiao Zhiyong (1818—1907), who was the most famous member of the Qiao family. Construction began in 1756 during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the Qing dynasty and was completed sometime in the 18th century. The estate covers 9000 square meters and has 313 rooms with 4000 square meters within 6 large courtyards and 19 smaller courtyards. Architects consider it to be one of the finest remaining examples of imposing private residences in northern China. It has been converted into a museum and has many period furnishings. It is famous for being the chief location in the Zhang Yimou film Raise the Red Lantern.

What to expect at Qiao Family Compound
The Qiao Family Compound occupies an area of 8,274 square meters, or about two acres, with a construction area of 3,870 square meters. It consists of six main courtyards, 20 smaller courtyards and 313 rooms. The inner courtyards and passages of the Qiao Compound were designed in the shape of the Chinese character "shuangxi", which means "double happiness" in English.

Brick Carving
Brick carvings can be found on the wall and balusters, depicting various subjects such as flowers (traditional propitious pictures in the culture of Shanxi Province). For example, the carving on the corbie-step doorstep of the third yard shows Kylin (a mascot in Chinese culture) carrying a son to a mother figure. They caved this picture in the hope of having more male offspring.

Wood Carving
The wood carvings are widely praised for they are extremely lifelike and possess some kind of meaning. For example, the caving of the three gods of fortune, prosperity and longevity can be found on the main gate of the second yard. These three gods represent all human desires, so they are very popular in China.

Murals
Beautiful gold murals are located under each eave of the compound. Some of these paintings portray fables and some others concern more prosaic subjects such as flowers, birds, railway lines, railway stations, clocks, etc. Although exposed to the wind and sun for hundreds of years, they are still shining
