Mengshan Giant Buddha

Introducing Mengshan Mountain Giant Buddha
The Mengshan Giant Buddha is a stone statue located 20 kilometers southwest of downtown Taiyuan. This colossal Buddha statue was carved on a cliff face on Mengshan Mountain in the year 551, during China's Northern and Southern Dynasties. It is believed to be China’s oldest stone-carved Buddha statue, making it over 160 years older than world's largest sitting stone sculpture of Leshan Giant Buddha, near Chengdu. The Mengshan Mountain Giant Buddha statue is 63 meters tall. When first discovered in the 1980s, parts of the main body were buried in silt and rubbles and its head missing. From 2006 to 2008, the statue was given a CNY10.8 million facelift, a 12-meter tall head was constructed for the statue. however the money did not last further down than the neck. It was not until 2008 that it was opened to visitors after years of restoration.
