What to expect at Napa Hai Nature Reserve

With the temperature on gradual rise in spring, melt water from the snow-capped mountains empties into the Napahai Lake, and the migrant birds flock into the wetland area for food and inhabitation. They include the black-necked crane, the black stork and the bar-headed goose. The integrated ecosystem of everglade in Napahai Nature Reserve attracts more than 300 blacknecked cranes every year to live through the winter. To protect the Napahai Lake wetland, Shangri-La City has taken actions in recent years to improve the surrounding water environment. As a result, ecology of the wetland area is restored, and the population of migrant birds in winter has increased year on year. Currently, the reserve houses 170 plus bird species with a population of around 30,000. The ruddy shelduck and the bar-headed goose are the dominating ones.

The land around Napa Lake is luxuriant with grass every May. Herds of animals enjoy the pasture land beside Napa Lake. Birds and flowers surrounding Napa Lake make the place look like a traditional Chinese scenic painting come to life. For generations, the villagers on the banks of Napa Lake have striven to protect their precious lake. Many Tibetan People live around the Lake, and traditional Tibetan white towers can be found in almost every village.
