Yanmen Pass

Introducing Datong Yanmen Pass
Yanmen Pass is known as Yanmenguan. Yanmen Pass encompasses three fortified gatehouses situated along the Great Wall of China. Historically, this area held immense strategic importance in ancient China, serving as a crucial choke point that regulated access between the valleys of central Shanxi and the expansive Eurasian Steppe. The Northern Qi dynasty erected a segment of the Great Wall through the pass in AD 557, mirroring the later Ming Great Wall's function as an inner line of defense. In 579, this wall was reinforced and expanded to safeguard China against threats from the Blue Turks and the Khitans. Subsequently, during the Ming Dynasty in 1374, it underwent reconstruction as part of the Inner Great Wall, which forms the defensive structures visible at Yanmen Pass today.

What to Expect at Datong Yanmen Pass
The fortifications within Yanmen Pass constitute a vital segment of the defenses comprising the "inner line" of the Great Wall, in conjunction with Ningwu and Pianguan Passes. Historically, Yanmen Pass held the esteemed position of being the foremost among the "Nine Passes under Heaven". The preserved Ming-era fortifications span approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) in length and stand at a height of 4 meters (13 feet). This complex includes three fortified gatehouses: Dili ("Chosen Battleground") serves as the western gate, Yanmen proper as the central gate, and Tianxian ("Impregnable Fortress") as the eastern gate.
