What to Expect at Urumqi Museum

Entrance Hall & Introduction Gallery
The Entrance Hall is dominated by a magnificent bas-relief. Stretching over 20 meters (65 ft) long and 6 meters (20 ft) high, its surface a canvas of white lotus petals – the artwork’s primary motif – gracefully encircling a majestic central panorama. This panorama draws the eye to the awe-inspiring Bogda Peak rising in the distance, with the cityscape of Urumqi sprawled out before it. At the very heart of the scene, pomegranate seeds spill forth, a symbolic representation of the region’s abundant blessings, nestled amongst depictions of Xinjiang’s diverse ethnic groups. Delicate cloud and wave patterns frame the entire composition, infusing it with a sense of harmony and dynamism.

This grand artistic statement serves as a prelude to the museum’s Introduction Gallery, tucked just beyond the bas-relief. Here, the journey through Urumqi’s rich tapestry continues. Selected historical buildings and elements of the city are presented through the lens of both time and space, inviting visitors to unravel the layers of history, geography, and culture that converge in this fascinating city.
