Tongli Water Town

Introducing Tongli Water Town
Tongli Water Town, an ancient township nestled in the outskirts of Suzhou City, is a rich mix of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Established during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the town spans 132 square kilometers (51 square miles) and is defined by the intricate network of waterways that give it life. Fifteen canals, arranged in the shape of the Chinese character “川” (meaning “river”), divide the town into seven picturesque islets, interconnected by 49 ancient bridges. Traditional houses, densely packed along the edges of Tongli’s picturesque canals, contribute to the idyllic scenery that has earned the town its reputation as “A place where everyday life sets sail, carried on the rhythm of the flowing water.”

This network of lakes and waterways not only defines Tongli’s charm but also protected it from the ravages of war in ancient times, rendering it inaccessible to invaders. As a result, Tongli boasts a remarkable collection of well-preserved Ming (1368-1644 AD) and Qing (1644-1912 AD) dynasty architecture, including various private gardens, temples, and houses. This historical richness is evident in the numerous poets, painters, Confucian scholars, and government officials who have graced its streets throughout the ages.

Forget postcards, Tongli Water Town is a destination demands to be seen to be believed. Here, among the winding canals and whispered stories of generations past, you’ll discover an authentic China often only dreamed of.

What to Expect at the Tongli Water Town
Stepping off the beaten path and into Tongli Water Town is like stepping back in time. Ancient China seems to breathe again here, where around every corner, vibrant conversations of the locals mingle with the scent of street delicacies, tempting people to pull up a chair and join the chorus of laughter. Spend your day getting blissfully lost amidst the labyrinthine alleyways, discovering hidden architectural gems around each bend, and perhaps pausing to sip local brews by the water.

The Retreat & Reflection Garden
Among the charming attractions of Tongli Water Town, the Retreat & Reflection Garden (退思园) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2001. Built in 1887 by Ren Lansheng (任兰生), an imperial official facing impeachment during the late Qing Dynasty, the garden embodies tranquility and contemplation. Its very name, derived from a verse in The Commentary of Zuo (左传), speaks to its essence: “…he shows loyalty to his country, when he retreats, he reflects and mends his ways.”
Despite its relatively compact size of 1.4 acres, the Retreat & Reflection Garden masterfully incorporates all the essential elements of a traditional Suzhou garden. It unfolds progressively: beginning with the residential area, featuring an entrance hall, tea room, main hall, and two smaller buildings, leading to the central courtyard. Here, the Welcoming Guests Hall, Year-Round Residence, Spring Viewing and Moon Gazing Tower, along with other decorative elements, create a sense of harmony and balance. The back garden, with its explosion of flowers and verdant landscapes, provides a fitting conclusion to the garden’s carefully orchestrated design.

Ming & Qing Street
The Ming & Qing Street, constructed in 1996, is a notable commercial area in the ancient water town. Stretching over 160 meters (525 ft), this street showcases architecture reminiscent of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its unique layout features two parallel thoroughfares – an upper and a lower street – preserving the traditional design of ancient Chinese towns. Along both sides of these streets, local restaurants and souvenir shops are interspersed among well-preserved buildings. These structures stand shoulder-to-shoulder, their weathered facades exuding a sense of pride and history. Elaborate wooden brackets, resembling strong arms, extend from beneath the eaves to support gracefully curved roofs adorned with a patchwork of aged clay tiles. All of these details, from the architecture to the traditional businesses, work together to offer visitors an authentic experience of ancient Chinese life.

Tongli Wetlands Park
The Tongli Wetlands Park is nestled in the northeast region of Tongli Water Town. Bordering the ancient Zhouzhuang Water Town and cradled by the waters of Cheng Lake (澄湖) and Bai Xian Lake (白蚬湖), it serves as a scenic link between these popular tourist destinations. Within its boundaries lie majestic forests of dawn redwood and bald cypress, alongside vibrant orchards of loquat, camphor, ginkgo, peach, and pear trees. A fragrant herb garden, serene bamboo groves, well-stocked fish ponds, and a dedicated plant nursery further enhance the park’s diverse landscape, creating a tapestry of serenity and charm for visitors seeking respite amidst the bustling towns.

Luoxing Isle
Luoxing Island, a historical treasure nestled in Tongli Lake, offers a captivating blend of Buddhist and Taoist traditions amidst scenic beauty. Reached only by boat, the island’s northern section features the intricate Avalokiteśvara Temple and Mahavira Hall, inspiring reverence for their Buddhist heritage. A subtle transition occurs as a doorway leads to the Wenchang Pavilion, dedicated to the Taoist deity Wenchang God, marking the passage to Taoist spaces like the Doulao Pavilion. Beyond, a lakeside promenade grants breathtaking views of Tongli Lake, adorned with a charming zigzag bridge and, during bloom season, fields of lotus flowers in their full glory.

The Trio of Bridges
Tongli Water Town boasts dozens of ancient bridges, but none are as celebrated as the trio known as Taiping (Peace), Jili (Luck), and Changqing (Enduring Happiness). Though seemingly simple weathered stone structures, these bridges play a special role in the lives of Tongli’s residents. The oldest of the three, Taiping Bridge, is said to bestow safety and peace upon those who cross it. Jili Bridge represents good luck and prosperity, promising fortune and success to those who tread its path. Lastly, Changqing Bridge embodies enduring happiness and a fulfilling life.

It’s a local tradition to cross all three bridges during significant life events like a baby’s first month celebration, weddings, and 60th birthdays. Whether the bridges truly possess mystical powers is debatable, but they undoubtedly symbolize the hopes and aspirations of the locals—a yearning for peace, prosperity, and lasting happiness. Embrace the local custom and traverse these three bridges, allowing their symbolism to resonate with your own aspirations.

Nanyuan Tea House
Established in 1898, Nanyuan Tea House stands as one of the oldest operating tea houses in China. This charming two-story structure can accommodate over 100 guests, making it the perfect place to while away a leisurely afternoon. The first floor offers a vibrant atmosphere, ideal for enjoying snacks, browsing local crafts, and witnessing captivating tea ceremonies. Picture yourself sipping tea with picturesque views of the ancient street, the serene river, and the timeworn trees that line its banks. For a more tranquil experience, ascend to the second floor. Here, you can savor fine teas, engage in a friendly game of Chinese chess, or simply relax while immersed in the gentle sounds of birdsong and the delicate fragrance of flowers.
