What to expect at Shanghai Jing'an Temple

The first temple was built in 247 AD, at the time of the Kingdom of Wu, during the Three Kingdoms period. Originally located beside Suzhou Creek, Shanghai Jing'an Temple was relocated to its current site in 1216 during the Song Dynasty. The current temple was rebuilt once in the Qing Dynasty. It's most recent renovation was in late 2003.

The current temple was rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty but, during the Cultural Revolution, the temple was converted into a plastic factory. In 1983, it was returned to its original purpose and renovated with the Jing'An Pagoda completed in 2010.

In the temple there are three big halls - Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall and Three Sage Hall. Jing’an temple is famous for a portrait of the Sakyamuni; it is sitting in the Mahavira Hall. It is about 3.78 meters in height, 11,000ke in weight. It was so big that it had been torn down into several smaller pieces to be moved into the Mahavira Hall.
