1. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Included in the spectacular Wulingyuan Scenic Area near the city of Zhangjiajie, the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was the first area to be protected as a national park in China. Famed for its sandstone karst pillars stretching skywards which are draped in sub-tropical rainforest, the park was initially founded as a state-run tree farm in 1958 before being officially protected in 1982. Extending across around 50 square miles, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was also recognized as part of the Wulingyuan UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The park’s famous sandstone pillars are the result of thousands of years of erosion by water draining through crevices. This water becomes acidic when it comes in contact with the carbon dioxide in the surrounding soil and atmosphere. Over time, this water drains through the fractures in the rock, gradually dissolving it away into the unique and iconic karst landscape seen today in Zhangjiajie. This process is further assisted by the expansion of ice within the crevices over Zhiangjiajie's chilly winter months, creating ever-wider spaces between the karst pillars. 2. Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen literally means "Gate to Heaven" in Chinese. The steep cliff face of the mountain collapsed and formed a 130 meter (426 feet) high and 30 meter (98 feet) wide "cave," or a natural bridge, in the year of 263. Since then, the mountain has been named as Tianmen. Tianmen Mountain has been called "one of the most beautiful mountains in the world” by visitors. It has huge quartzite sandstone peaks and a giant natural sandstone arch, offering astonishing scenery. With natural miracles present in the Tianmen Cave and the impressive forest, the site has been frequented by writers, poets, artists and emperors, as well as monks since ancient times. The Cableway located on the mountain is reportedly the "longest passenger cableway of high mountains in the world" and has 98 cars and a total length of 7,455 metres (24,459 ft). 3. Baofeng Lake
Baofeng Lake is a reservoir built by local poeple to store water for irrigation. The water of the lake is sublimely clean as it’s an alpine lake. The green water of the lake gives the feeling of jade surrounded by mountains on all its sides. Board a wooden boat for the cruise around the lake which lasts for 30 minutes. At various points in the lake there are huts from which a beautiful girl walks out and renders a traditional folk song with her melodious voice. The crystal clear green waters, lush green peaks and a soothing song is all you need to unwind midst your China exploration. After the cruise, take the bus back to the entrance gate and walk to Baofeng Lake Wterfall at the entrance. Pouring down from a hundred meters above with thunderous sound this is another key highlight at Baofeng Lake.
4. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is glass-bottomed and is transparent. It spans a deep canyon in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The record-breaking Glass Bridge measures 1,410 feet long and stands 984 feet above the ground. Not only is the structure the world’s longest and tallest glass bridge in the world, but it also overlooks a UNESCO World Heritage Site—making the views all the more exquisite. When walking across the bridge you can see all the way down to the bottom of the canyon through the glass bridge.
