Explore Hongcun Ancient Village
Hongcun Ancient Village is located at the foot of a hill next to a stream which forms two pools, the Moon Pond in the centre of the village and the other to the south. It is most noted for its overall design that resembles the shape of an ox with the nearby hill (Leigang Hill) interpreted as the head, and two trees standing on it as the horns. Four bridges across the Jiyin stream can be seen as the legs whilst the houses of the village form the body. Inside the “body”, the Jiyin stream represents the intestines and various lakes such as the “South Lake” form the other internal organs. Principal Street connects the South Lake and the Moon Pond to the north and south, respectively. The ancient Academy of the South Lake casts its shadow in the lake and creates a tranquil scene together with ancient trees and graceful buildings around it. Today, the approximately 150 residences dating back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties are said to be among the best of their kind in China. Hongcun Ancient Village was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.

Explore Mukeng Village
The movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was the dark horse in the 73rd Annual Academy Awards in 2001. It unexpectedly picked up four Oscars: for best foreign language film, best cinematography, best original score and best art direction. The stunning beauty of Mukeng, one of the locations, was unveiled to a worldwide audience. Mukeng Village rests in a six kiometer long valley. Covered by bamboo forest, the valley is like a giant emerald. Sometimes the winds bend the treetops all the way into the recesses of the valley, like waves on a sea of green. In the movie, a bamboo forest featured in a decisive battle – two swordsmen fought a contest on the treetops. The scene impressed many people and attracted more and more travelers to Mukeng, as well as painters and photographers. Embedded in the middle of the green sea is a small village. In the distance, the houses, with sparkling white exteriors, look like white rocks in an open sea. There are only 24 households in Mukeng.
