Day 1 Arrival in Dunhuang
Meet your guide at Dunhuang airport or train station and transfer to your hotel in a private vehicle. Throughout Dunhuang's history of over two thousand years, it has always served as a critical gateway leading to the west due to its unique geographical location at the juncture of Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang provinces. Therefore Dunhuang is one of the most important crossroads on the Silk Road. Starting from Dunhuang the Silk Road was split into the northern and southern routes.

Day 2 Dunhuang, Mogao Caves, Dunhuang Museum, Singing Sand Dunes & Crescent Lake
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mogao Caves in the morning. The Mogao Caves (also known as the Dunhuang Grottoes) boast the largest collection of Buddhist grottoes in existence in China. Housed in the 492 cave temples are over 2000 sculptures and 45,000 square meters of frescos dating back as early as one thousand years ago (covering a period of ten dynasties). The statues are painted and carved directly into the cave walls. The most famous aspect of Dunhuang's grottoes is the murals that feature Buddhist stories, folk culture, farming, hunting as their main themes. Next, visit Dunhuang Museum to understand the role and development of Dunhuang as a crossroad of civilization, religion and culture of Silk Road civilization. Admire the impressive collection of written sutras and relics excavated from the caves. Afterwards, enjoy a camel ride on the scenic Singing Sand Dunes, called by Marco Polo as the rumbling sands. Then relax at the desert oasis, the Crescent Lake, a small freshwater lake that has been a vital source of water here for thousands of years.

Day 3 Dunhuang, Yumen Pass, Han Dynasty Great Wall, Yadan National Geological Park
Drive out of Dunhuang to Yumen Pass (1 hour). Admire the scenery of changing from bustling city to desolate Gobi Desert on the way. Get a close-up look at the site of the Yumenguan Pass, named for the many jade caravans passing through and hear stories about its past prosperity. Picture the busy scene of this important pass with many caravans coming and going every day in ancient times compared with today’s desolate view. Afterwards, make a photo top at the best preserved part of the Han Dynasty Great Wall of China. With limited available materials, Han Dynasty Great Wall near Dunhuang was built with a mixture of sand, dirt, rose willow, reed and apocynum. Finally, explore Yadan National Geological Park on a cable car, be intrigued by the phenomena of rocks formed naturally by erosion to appear in amazing shapes – like a lion, a peacock, a pyramid and the sphinx. Constant weather effects mean the present shapes will also gradually change.
