The Manchurian Imperial Palace was designed as a miniature version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. It was divided into an inner court and outer court. The outer or front court was used for administrative purposes and the inner or rear court as the royal residence. For instance, the precious carpet of the Jingren Palace taken out from the Forbidden City by Puyi, a piece of white bear skin used when Puyi met those foreign diplomats, and many governmental statements signed by Puyi.

During the Manchukuo period, rapid industrialisation and militarisation took place. Hsinking was a well-planned city with broad avenues and modern public works. The city underwent rapid expansion in both its economy and infrastructure. Many of buildings built during the Japanese colonial era still stand today, including those of the Eight Departments of Manchukuo: the Department of Public Security, Department of Judicature, Department of Economy, Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture, Department of Education and Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Sanitation and the Supreme Ministry of Justice. The buildings that housed these departments are in the center of the city and each has their own unique and distinctive characteristics.
