South Lake Park

Introducing South Lake Park
South Lake Park is an expansive urban oasis located in Changchun. Established in 1935, South Lake Park has a history of about 90 years. Spanning 238.6 hectares, it holds the distinction of being one of the largest urban parks in China, second only to Beijing’s Summer Palace (290 hectares).

Having functioned as a royal garden for the Manchukuo state (the Japanese-controlled puppet state) in the 1930s, South Lake Park has since evolved into a cherished recreational space offering a wide array of activities. Its picturesque landscapes, adorned with bridges, pavilions, lush greenery, and vibrant flower gardens, make it a beloved destination for both locals and tourists seeking relaxation and enjoyment amidst natural beauty.

What to Expect at the South Lake Park
Escape the city’s hustle and find peace in South Lake Park. Connect with nature as you stroll its leafy paths. Breathe deeply by the lake or find a quiet moment in a delicate pavilion — it’s all wonderfully serene.

Graceful Lotus Pond
South Lake Park’s lotus pond, a sprawling four-hectare (9.88 acres) expanse, is Changchun’s largest lotus viewing spot. More than one hundred thousand lotus plants cover the water’s surface, their broad, jade-green leaves a feast for the eyes. Interspersed among the lotus are 1,300 water lilies, adding delicate counterpoints of color and texture to the dominant emerald hues. The diverse varieties of lotus and water lilies create a captivating spectacle. Their unique forms and vibrant blossoms ensure a breathtaking display during peak season.

Four Pavilions Bridge
The Four Pavilions Bridge is a striking cross-shaped structure situated on the South Lake. Four traditional Chinese pavilions, each boasting an orange-tiled pyramidal roof adorned with ornate ridges and finials, stand at each corner of the bridge. Connecting these pavilions are elegant white walkways, enclosing a central fountain that adds to the serene ambiance. Visitors can leisurely stroll along these walkways, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and admiring the picturesque reflections of the pavilions in the calm water below.

The Golden Beach
The park’s beach area was a haven of sun-drenched relaxation. Soft, white sand stretched along the shoreline, inviting a bask in the warmth. Children built elaborate sandcastles, their laughter echoing through the air as gentle waves lapped at the shore. Families splashed and played in the shallows, while others simply relaxed under the shade of colorful beach umbrellas, enjoying the refreshing breeze and the soothing sounds of the water.

White Birch Forest
The white birch forest, covering 3.2 hectares (7.91 acres), is the park’s most distinctive autumnal scene. The prime viewing time is from early to mid-October. During this period, golden birch leaves flutter down, carpeting the paths. Sunlight filters through the amber canopy, casting a dappled light that creates a dreamlike, fairytale atmosphere. Strolling through the forest, the soft leaves underfoot cushion each step, the rustling leaves whisper secrets on the wind, and the faint chirping of robins punctuates the peaceful silence—a moment of pure sensory immersion.
