Poyang Lake is the largest fresh water lake in China, the largest and most important wintering area for migratory birds in middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and even in East Asia. Every year, the total number of wintering waterfowls in the Poyang Lake was more than 500,000, while Poyang Lake is the very important wintering ground for part of the rare and endangered species around the world. A total of 381 bird species are recorded at Poyang Lake, belonging to 18 orders 64 families, accounting for 27.8% of bird species in China. During the winter, the lake becomes home to many migrating Siberian cranes, up to 90% of which spend the winter there.
