Constructed in 652 AD, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda stands at an impressive 64 meters tall and from the top it offers a great panoramic view over Xian. Daci'en Temple was built in 648 AD by Crown Prince Li Zhi who later became Emperor Gaozong in honour of his mother, Empress Wende for her kindness and grace. Then you will visit Shaanxi History Museum which houses over 370,000 items, including murals, paintings, pottery, coins, as well as bronze, gold, and silver objects.

Day 3 Xian, Terracotta Warriors, Emperor Qin's Mausoleum, Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Xian Museum, Great Mosque & Muslim Quarter
Morning visit to Terracotta Warriors. Considered one of the foremost archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, the 2,000-year-old Terracotta Army was discovered by accident in 1974 by local farmers digging a well. The 8,000-plus life-sized warriors are arranged in vaults to guard the Mausoleum of Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, a major architect of the Great Wall and unifier of China. Then you will visit the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shihuang which was constructed over 38 years, from 246 to 208 BC, and is situated underneath a 76-meter-tall tomb mound shaped like a truncated pyramid. In the afternoon, you will visit the 1300 year old Tang Dynasty constructed Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a perfect example of the multi-eaved square brick pagodas built in ancient China. Then you will visit Xian Museum which boasts nearly 130,000 relics that all relate to the history of Ancient China and Xian specifically. Your last stop will be the Great Mosque and Muslim Quarter. Being the starting point of the Silk Road, the ancient trade route linking China with the Middle East and Europe, Xian is deeply influenced by Islamic culture which is best observed in the Muslim Quarter. Xian Muslim Quarter covers several blocks with an estimated 60,000 Muslims in the region. There are about seven ancient mosques in the area, among which the Great Mosque is the most famous and popular among all. At Xian's Muslim Quarter you will find a seemingly endless labyrinth of street food, restaurants and bustling local life.

Day 4 Xian, Famen Temple, Qianling Mausoleum, Tomb of Princess Yongtai
Drive  for about 2 hours to Famen Temple in the morning. Located 120 km west of Xian, Famen Temple is famous in the world for storing the veritable Finger Bone of the Gautama Buddha (Sakyamuni). Thereafter, it is a Buddhist place of pilgrimage due to the discovery of what is claimed as a true relic of Buddha. Upon arrival, you will visit Namaste Dagoba with a height of 148 meters and worship the finger bone of the Gautama Buddha (Sakyamuni). This Famen Temple tour lasts for about two hours. In the afternoon, you will visit Qianling Mausoleum where China’s only female emperor, Wu Zetian was buried with her husband Emperor Gaozong. The mausoleum is renowned for its many Tang dynasty stone statues located above ground. Afterward you will head to the Tomb of Princess Yongtai. This tomb has been excavated and the mural paintings adorning the subterranean walls depicting the court life of Tang Dynasty are just fantastic.

Day 5 Bullet Train to Zhangye, Rainbow Colored Mountains
Transfer to Xian railway station for a seven hour & thirty minutes bullet train ride to Zhangye. Upon arrival, visit Rainbow Colored Mountains located inside Zhangye Danxia Geopark. Covering 200 square miles, Zhangye Danxia Geopark was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The Danxia landforms are made of strips of red sandstone alternating with chalk and other sediments that were deposited over millions of years, like slices of a layered cake. They are a geological wonder of the world known for their otherworldly colors that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains. The Rainbow Colored Mountains are cretaceous sandstones and siltstones that were deposited in China before the Himalayan Mountains were formed. The sand and silt was deposited with iron and trace minerals that provided it with the key ingredient to form the colors we see today.

Meals Included: Western buffet breakfast at hotel
Hotels: 4-star Ducheng Holiday Hotel or similar

Day 6 Zhangye City Tour, Bullet Train to Xian, Transfer to Xian Airport
Morning visit to the Giant Buddha Temple. Marco Polo discribed a giant reclining Buddha in the city of Zhangye where he stood in front of the Buddha and was inspired by the dedication of the Buddhist monks to create such a large structure. Originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227), the temple is home to the largest statue of the Reclining Buddha in China. The eponymous Giant Buddha statue is 33 metres (108 ft.) high, 49 metres (161 ft.) wide, and 24 metres (79 ft.) long. The temple itself is also one of the largest remaining relics of the Western Xia Dynasty. This Giant Buddha Temple is also believed to be the birthplace of Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor who ruled China in the 13th century. Entering the temple, you are walking in the footsteps of Marco Polo. After visiting the Giant Buddha Temple, you will be transferred to Zhangye train station & board bullet train back to Xian. You will be met by your driver and transferred to Xian airport for your departure flight at midnight.

We had a great 6 day tour hitting the highlights of Xian & Zhangye, in Xian the Terracotta Warriors was so splendid! Our guide Harry was great! Terrific English, extremely knowledgeable, and a delight to spend the day with. The logistics were easy with an early pick up at the hotel with a guide who helped acquire boarding passes in the airport and directed us to security. It was a brifly trip but totally worth it to see Xi'an and Zhangye, Especially the rainbow color mountains. One of my favorite trip in an overall amazing week in China!
