Italian Style Street

Introducing Italian Style Street (from Tourist Information and Consulting Center of Tianjin)
Italian Style Street was former Italian concession (Britain, France, America, Germany, Japan, Russia, Italy, Austria and Belgium, the seventh concessions in Tianjin). It was constructed in 1902, covers an area of 28.45 hectares, the construction area of 400,000 square meters. In the Italian Style Street, 137 buildings are all designed by Italian designer, including consulate, military camp, school, church, playground, vegetable market, fire brigade, garden and square in western classic style. The bloc in unique style is the only well preserved Italian style building group in Asia.

What to expect at Italian Style Street

In history, there are plenty famous politicians and celebrities of China and Italy lived here. The former residence and study of Liang Qichao, who is the modern famous reformer and scholar, are on the street. These two buildings were designed by Italian architect Bairuneo; the former residence of Cao Yu, Tang Yulin, Hua Shigui and Zhang Tinge, the Family Meng's ancestral hall, Zeng Guoquan's ancestral hall and Anjili Hutong, these cultural relics of characteristic architectural styles have a long history. Marco Polo square was the former center of the concession. The construction of the Italian concession was around this square, and it was also the morning exercise place for Italian Garrison.

In the center of the Italian Style Street Square, the sculpture (statue of Irene) has a height of 13.8 meters. In 2004, statue was rebuilt according to the record, and her sword was replaced to olive branch, symbolized the peace and friendship. Six tower buildings around the square are typical Mediterranean Style, and were named after the name of Goddess in the Greek mythology. Freedom Avenue is the first walking street in Italian style area. Along the street, the main businesses were catering and entertainment. In the concession period, it was called "Dante Road". The arrangement of streets in the Italian style area is in shape of chessboard, no same building in other places.
