Covering 200 square miles, Zhangye Danxia Geopark was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The Danxia landforms are made of strips of red sandstone alternating with chalk and other sediments that were deposited over millions of years, like slices of a layered cake. They are a geological wonder of the world known for their otherworldly colors that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains. The Rainbow Colored Mountains are cretaceous sandstones and siltstones that were deposited in China before the Himalayan Mountains were formed. The sand and silt was deposited with iron and trace minerals that provided it with the key ingredient to form the colors we see today. Hike through five different "platforms" of height and explore the changing views.

Day 3 Zhangye, Mati Temple Grottoes, Giant Buddha Temple, Bullet Train to Xining

Here you'll find Tibetan and Chinese cave art and the hoof print of the legendary flying horse who chose the mountain as a holy site. Then you will visit the Giant Buddha Temple. Marco Polo discribed a giant reclining Buddha in the city of Zhangye where he stood in front of the Buddha and was inspired by the dedication of the Buddhist monks to create such a large structure. Originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227), the temple is home to the largest statue of the Reclining Buddha in China. The eponymous Giant Buddha statue is 33 metres (108 ft.) high, 49 metres (161 ft.) wide, and 24 metres (79 ft.) long. The temple itself is also one of the largest remaining relics of the Western Xia Dynasty. This Giant Buddha Temple is also believed to be the birthplace of Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor who ruled China in the 13th century. Entering the temple, you are walking in the footsteps of Marco Polo. In the afternoon, you will take a bullet train (2 hours) to Xining and you will be transferred to hotel in Xining.

Riyue Mounation marks the boundary between the eastern agricultural area and the western pastoral area of Qinghai Province. From the top of the mountain there is a superb panorama of the beautiful landscape - both prairie and farmland. Continue to drive to Qinghai Lake. Qinghai Lake is the largest lake in China which stretches 105 km at length and 63 km at width and occupies a surface area of over 4,500 square kilometers. At 3200 meters above the sea level, Qinghai Lake was considered to be a holy lake by both Tibetans and Mongolians. It is evaluated as China's Most Beautiful Lake by China National Geographic. Visit Kumbum Monastery in the afternoon. Built in 1560 by the third Dalai Lama, Kumbum monastery is one of the six most important Gelukpa (Yellow Sect) monasteries in Tibet.
