• Keep your passport on you constantly. It might be needed to buy entrance tickets.

Day 1 Arrival in Lanzhou, Lanzhou Airport or Train Station Pick-up
You will met by a private driver at Lanzhou airport or railway stations and transferred to your hotel. After getting settled at the hotel, you may explore the downtown area on your own or relax during the remainder of the day. Lanzhou is the capital and largest city of Gansu Province in Northwest China. Situated on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, Lanzhou has been a major stop on the ancient Silk Road.

Day 2 Lanzhou, Bingling Temple Grottoes, Gansu Provincial Museum, Waterwheel Garden, Iron Bridge of Yellow River, White Pagoda Mountain
Drive to Liujiaxia Reservoir (90 minutes) in the morning. Liujiaxia Reservoir is formed by the Liujiaxia Dam on the Yellow River. When the dam became fully operational in 1974, it became China's largest hydroelectric power plant, and remained so until the 1980s. Cruise on the Yellow River (40 minutes), you will arrive at Binglingsi Temple Grottoes. Bingling means thousand Buddhas or 10,000 Buddhas in Tibetan language. the Bingling Temple is a series of grottoes filled with Buddhist sculpture carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River. Back to Lanzhou in the afternoon, visit Gansu Provincial Museum. The most famous collection of this museum is the 14cm-tall Flying Horse of Wuwei. This outstanding bronze horse has become an iconic emblem of China. Then visit Waterwheel Garden, the oldest irrigation tool along the Yellow River. Afterwards, visit the Iron Bridge of Yellow River and White Pagoda Mountain. Completed in 1909, the German-made Iron Bridge of Yellow River represents the first permanent bridge built on the Yellow River. White Pagoda Mountain affords a great bird's eye view of Lanzhou City.

Day 3 Bullet Train to Xining, Riyue Mountain, Qinghai Lake
Bullet Train to Xining (2 hours) in the morning. Visit Qinghai Lake upon arrival. On the way, visit Riyue Mountain (Sun & Moon Mountain), a memorial dedicated to the Tang Dynasty Princess Wencheng, who is credited as one of the people who brought Buddhism to Tibet. Riyue Mountain marks the boundary between the eastern agricultural area and the western pastoral area of Qinghai Province. From the top of the mountain there is a superb panorama of the beautiful landscape - both prairie and farmland. Continue to drive to Qinghai Lake. Qinghai Lake is the largest lake in China which stretches 105 km at length and 63 km at width and occupies a surface area of over 4,500 square kilometers. At 3200 meters above the sea level, Qinghai Lake was considered to be a holy lake by both Tibetans and Mongolians. It is evaluated as China's Most Beautiful Lake by China National Geographic.

Day 4 Kumbum Monastery, Bullet Train to Zhangye, Rainbow Colored Mountains
Morning visit to Kumbum Monastery. Built in 1560 by the third Dalai Lama, Kumbum monastery is one of the six most important Gelukpa (Yellow Sect) monasteries in Tibet. It is the birthplace of Gelukpa founder, Tsongkhapa. His disciples later on became the ancestors of the Living Buddha system, Dalai Lama and Panchan Lama. Board bullet train to Zhangye (2 hours). Upon arrival, visit Rainbow Colored Mountains located inside Zhangye Danxia Geopark which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The Danxia landforms are made of strips of red sandstone alternating with chalk and other sediments that were deposited over millions of years, like slices of a layered cake. They are a geological wonder of the world known for their otherworldly colors that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains. The Rainbow Colored Mountains are cretaceous sandstones and siltstones that were deposited in China before the Himalayan Mountains were formed. The sand and silt was deposited with iron and trace minerals that provided it with the key ingredient to form the colors we see today. Hike through five different "platforms" of height and explore the changing views.

Day 5 Mati Temple Grottoes, Giant Buddha Temple, Bullet Train to Jiayuguan
Morning visit to the Mati Temple Grottoes (1-hour drive). The legend of this Temple (Horse Hoof Temple) can be traced back to the 4th century. Here you'll find Tibetan and Chinese cave art and the hoof print of the legendary flying horse who chose the mountain as a holy site. Then you will visit the Giant Buddha Temple. Marco Polo described a giant reclining Buddha in the city of Zhangye where he stood in front of the Buddha and was inspired by the dedication of the Buddhist monks to create such a large structure. Originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227), the temple is home to the largest statue of the Reclining Buddha in China. The eponymous Giant Buddha statue is 33 meters (108 ft.) high, 49 meters (161 ft.) wide, and 24 meters (79 ft.) long. The temple itself is also one of the largest remaining relics of the Western Xia Dynasty. This Giant Buddha Temple is also believed to be the birthplace of Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor who ruled China in the 13th century. Entering the temple, you are walking in the footsteps of Marco Polo. In the afternoon, you will take a bullet train to Jiayuguan (2 hours) and you will be transferred to hotel in Jiayuguan.

Day 6 Jiayuguan, Jiayuguan Fortress, Wei & Jin Tombs, Overhanging Great Wall, Drive to Dunhuang
Morning visit to Jiayuguan Fortress. Jaiyuguan Fortress is the most western end of the Great Wall. Also known as "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven", this pass is the best preserved and most magnificent military building among the three passes of the Great Wall. Located at the narrowest point of the western part of Hexi Corridor, Jiayuguan Pass is a key passageway of the ancient Silk Road. It commands fascinating views of the boundless Gobi Desert and the snow-capped Qilian Mountains. Then we will stop by the Overhanging Great Wall. When viewed from afar, this part of Great Wall of China looks like it is hanging over the mountain tops, giving it the name Overhanging Great Wall. Later, proceed to Wei-Jin Mural Brick Tomb, a huge tomb group of more than 1,400 tombs built between the 3rd and 5th century and houses vast collection of murals. Drive to Dunhuang (4 hours), the most important city along the Silk Road where silk Road split into its southern and northern routes either side of the impassable Taklamakan Desert.

Day 7 Dunhuang, Magao Caves, Singing Sand Dunes, Crescent Moon Lake
Morning visit to Mogao Caves. Mogao Caves, also known as the Dunhuang Grottoes, boast the largest collection of Buddhist grottoes in existence in China. Housed in the 492 cave temples are over 2000 sculptures and 45,000 square meters of frescoes dating back as early as one thousand years ago (covering a period of ten dynasties). The statues are painted and carved directly into the cave walls. The most famous aspect of Dunhuang's grottoes is the murals that feature Buddhist stories, folk culture, farming, hunting as their main themes. The caves was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. In the afternoon you will have a camel ride on the scenic Singing Sand Dunes, called by Marco Polo as the rumbling sands. Then relax at the desert oasis, the Crescent Moon Lake, a small freshwater lake that has been a vital source of water here for thousands of years.
