Guangzhou Tianhou Palace is situated at the foot of Dajiao Hill in Guangzhou City which was a military stronghold during the opium war. Newly opened, it is one of the most magnificent of its kind with a 14.5 metres tall statue of the Goddess of the Sea. Guangzhou Nansha Tianhou Palace is the largest palace compound of its category in the world.

What to expect at Nansha Tianhou Palace

The Nansha Tianhou Palace statue is made from 365 pieces of granite, one for each day of the year, symbolizing protection of the region all year round. According to legend, Nansha Tianhou Palace came from a fishing background during the Ming Dynasty and died while trying to save others from drowning.

Guangzhou Nansha Tianhou Palace was first built in the Ming Dynasty, then was renovated during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1737-1795) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but was later ruined. The palace we see now was rebuilt in 1994 and completed in 1996.

In addition, there are seven forts together called Dajiao Mountain Forts in the palace, which have been listed as national priority cultural relic protection sites in 1982.

How to get to Nansha Tianhou Palace

By Metro
• Take Metro Line 4 and get off at Nansha Passenger Port. Then walk about 15 minutes to the palace.

By Bus
• Take bus Nansha 4 or 54 to Tianhougong Dongmen Station.
